Hole 2 is a deeply strategic par 5. The tee shot is elevated, encouraging players to swing away, with plenty of room to miss on the right, but danger on the left. The landing zone, however, narrows dramatically as fairway rises steeply. Only the longest hitters could get to the top this hill, about 150 yards from the green.
Playing long leaves a reachable green, but two problems limit access. The shot from under the hill will be blind, and the front of the green is almost completely blocked by deep bunkers. Where to aim below the ridge is tough. This view shows the green below the center-left of the large tree (image from center of fairway from above). The view below makes this clearer (image below ridge).
With this in mind, some players may consider a more conservative tee shot, and a conservative second, to set up an easy wedge into the green.
