Hole one is a downhill dogleg with OB on both sides. There is a trap along the ideal line to punish the overly ambitious.

A large greenside bunker blocks access to much of the green, and with the green sloping gently back to front, guards against players trying to avoid a downhill putt.

As an opening hole, it provides one of the most exciting tee shots of the day.
