Hole 17 Discussion

The 17th is a long par five that requires multiple carries. The hole is a subtle homage to the 14th at St Andrews, also called "Long." It feature a fairway bunker on the tee shot similar to the largest of the Beardies, the open, flat area on the right side of the fairway referencing the Elysian Fields, and the deep, cross bunkers referencing Hell bunker.

The drive must play over a series of cross bunkers, with multiple fairway bunkers narrowing the wide areas in the landing zones.

The second shot must carry two large, deep cross bunkers. The height of these bunkers obscures the view of the fairway, so note the locations of bunkers beyond.

The approach to the contoured green features bunkers in the front and back, with a large false front section which complicates the run up.

This is another hole where modern technology fails to showcase much of the design. The lower launch angles and run out of hickories exaggerates the dangers of the second shot, and adds relevance to the false front on the green.

Note: looking back from the green here, players can see the original mounding for the 18th tee, which is very much in play. This is one of the sections widened for safety reasons.
