Based on the 17th at Prestwick, the template is defined by a blind second shot, with bunkers in front of the green. The template typically tests distance control, but this version does not. This version was designed for a long shot in, so the green here is surrounded by mounding around the green that was called the “circus ring,” which would funnel these shots back toward the hole.
Here the choice is simply, play a safe drive short and hit a blind shot in, or play one toward the right-side bunkers to get a better look at the hole. The safe drive plays to a large hill. Above the hill are two aligning rocks to give players an idea of where the green is. There are plenty of bunkers right, so the more players to take them on, the easier their approach will be.
The green sits in a semi-punch bowl, with two deep bunkers in front. There is a bit of a swale in the front of the green which rewards accuracy to the pin location.
