Road hole is a slight dogleg left, par 4 defined by the road (out-of-bounds) along the left side. The approach shot allows the player to cut the corner, over the road, to shorten the needed distance off the tee. The hole is reminiscent of the Road Hole at St. Andrews, if it were played in reverse.
The tee shot plays mostly straight, with three encroaching fairway bunkers. One, short right about 175 yard out, the next, long left about 235 yards out, and finally, a third bunker sits on the right side 270 yards out to catch anything that runs long.
The ideal landing area is right of the second bunker, but that will likely be too far for most players. If players are short of the second bunker, they can cut about 10 yards off the hole by playing up against the left edge of the fairway and playing over the road. This, however is quite risky, as it brings some trees into play, and players might run out into the second bunker.
The standard approach from the center of the fairway will be a long shot (>170 yards) into another hourglass green. Trees on the right will punish a slice here. Playing to the front edge, and chipping on may be the safest bet here.
