Hole 5 Discussion

Hole 5 is the first of two drivable par 4s on the front nine. It’s usually around 275 to 280 yards to get it there from the tips, although it often plays into the wind and will require more than that to get it there. There’s room to bail out left (have your “fore” ready for the 3rd green and 4th tee), but any miss to the right will be disastrous, due to the tall grass and the fence. If you don’t trust yourself to swing a driver without killing a biker on Ohio Dr. with your slice, a 200-yard club should leave you an easy wedge in. The two bunkers on the left aren’t that bad, but the bunker on the front right can be very difficult to get out of. It’s better to be left than right, since it takes that bunker out of play. The only real defense this hole has, aside from the hazards right and the bunker, is the shape of the green. It slopes hard from back to front, with a shelf at the back. This hard slope makes any miss long disastrous, so if the pin is at the back on that shelf, do not go after it. Just put the ball at center of the green, leave yourself an uphill putt, and make sure you’re walking away with a par.
