Hole 5 Discussion

Cape is a C.B. MacDonald template first used on #14 at National Golf Links of America. This version has an obscured view from the tee, that makes the fairway look much more narrow than it is. There is a rock that shows the line to the center of the fairway beyond the hill; the landing zone tilts left in that area.

The approach leaves many options for players. The obvious option is a tight wedge to the center of the green. Another approach is playing a right-to-left shape into the green to try to reduce some of the risk from bunkers, and a third option here is to play a running shot up the fairway right into the large contour that should push the ball left to the opening of the green.

The green is nearly completely surrounded by bunkers and falls away gently, so stopping the ball is a must for players trying to go straight at it.
