Hole 3 Discussion

Before concentrating too much on strategy, admire the view from this tee box.

Here, hole #3 is a complete change of pace from the first two holes. On this tee shot, a powerful shot down the hill can give the player a solid advantage on this hole. The primary concern should be staying in bounds and out of the hazard in the woods. However the secondary concern comes from the prevailing winds, which if strong, may move a well-placed shot to the left, from the fairway to the trees. However, if a powerful shot does end up on the right side, it should be okay, but some trees there can interfere with the approach.

For the high handicapper, the safest play off the tee may be a simple punch shot down the hill just to get the ball on the fairway. This play, followed by a second, running shot to the edge of the green can make this one of the most accessible holes on this course for those playing for bogey.

The approach from the fairway will be downhill, and will likely be on a down-slope, so over-shooting the green is definitely a concern. Unfortunately, the low point in front of the green can be quite soft, so reaching the green in the air is advisable.

The pin position on this hole can dramatically effect the approach shot, as a right side pin will require much more and accuracy with the putter. Though this green will likely require a skilled put wherever the pin is placed.
