The property could close as early as February 19, about a month after the death of owner Tom Self. “I’ve been to all the best courses, played some of the best places in the world, but you get the pulse of the community here,” said Dave Stockton, the club’s two-time PGA Championship winner.
Just shy of its 50th anniversary, San Bernardino (Calif.) Golf Club is to close as early as President’s Day on February 19, the Riverside, Calif., Press-Enterprise reported.
Sonny Hammond, majority owner and son of late owner Tom Self, spent many of his formidable years on the 18-hole, par-70 course, and said he remembers when the clubhouse was brimming with people. Self, who died last month at 79, billed the privately-owned club as a haven for the public, the Press-Enterprise reported.
To see it close now, “it’s definitely going to be missed,” Hammond said.
