While Art Braswell is again in charge of the Calimesa Country Club, local golfers may be disappointed to hear the longtime owner doesn’t have any plans to reopen the course.

“I have no plans to reopen the golf course,” Braswell said last week in a phone interview. “We just lost too much money there … I should have closed it years ago, but I didn’t have the heart to do it.”

Braswell explained that while Charles Rollins and his group presented development plans to the community at a couple of forums in the fall of last year, they weren’t technically the owners, or at least not yet. The agreement was that Rollins and his group would develop the country club and eventually own it. In the beginning, however, the property “was still in our name,” said Braswell, who bought it with his brother Jim in 1980.
