Hole 16 is one of the three “signature holes” of East Potomac that provide the player with an Instagram-worthy view of the Washington Monument. Like the scenic 8th hole on the front, this long par 4 is beautiful, but one of the most difficult pars on the course. It often plays quite long, over 400 yards, and the tee shot is through a chute (although a much wider one than 14, and with the ability to simply go over the trees rather than through them. The fairway is pretty narrow, with trees to the right and a berm to the left punishing wayward shots. The main difficulty, however, comes from the green, which is a more extreme version of the 2nd green: long and very narrow, with the left side protected by deep bunkers and the right protected by deep rough and a stand of fir trees. Making a par here without some desperate scrambling requires an accurate approach shot, so there’s some pressure to hit a longer drive and have a wedge in instead of the short-to-mid-iron that would be required after a shorter drive. Five net four is not the end of the world on this hole. Enjoy the view, the real par is the friends we made along the way.
