The tee shot plays through an extremely narrow section of trees. The fairway moves strongly uphill, turning at the large fairway bunkers. Players should focus on at least getting to the corner so that the approach isn’t blind. The trick is to get past the trees, but short of the bunkers, which limits longer hitters from truly attacking the hole without serious risks.
The approach is also quite uphill to a green, with two enormous bunkers and a false front ready to punish anything short or offline.
“Hitting out of the narrow chute, my tee strategy is dictated by the wind. If it’s out of the north, a headwind, I’ll hit driver. If it’s calm, I’ll hit 3-wood. Basically, I’m using a club that puts me just short of the closest bunker on the left.”
“If you can just fire a driver off the bunkers, it leaves you with an 8-iron or 9-iron. Again, the Sunday flag, it’s the easiest flag, because you can hit it past the flag and it funnels back down the hill and you’ll normally have a 15-footer.”
Changes for 2022: Thirteen yards added to the back of the Masters tees without necessitating a change in length to the hole.
