The 18th hole at Southern Hills is incredibly challenging. The tee shot leads to an irregular landing zone, with a real chance of longer errant shots running into the creek. Any chance to clear the creek is thwarted by massive bunkers guarding the far side. Players must clearing the dogleg at a minimum.
The approach plays way uphill to a green that slopes extremely back to front, and is peppered by bunkers. Any trees impinging on the angle will play a significant role in how this shot gets played. Shots played close will be well rewarded, as a two putt is absolutely not guaranteed on this green.
“The drive is full of strategy. What to do? Play long left and stay on the high left side of the fairway? The approach will be longer but isn’t nearly as uphill. Play right into the inside of the dogleg just shy of the creek? Perhaps you will draw a level lie, perhaps not.
…The last 160 yards scale steeply uphill to a green behind a massive front left bunker.”
