The opening hole is a short par 5, with a fairway bunker in the usual driver landing area in the left of the fairway, with usually wet rough and trees protecting the OB road on the right. With a slice off the tee ending up in a guaranteed poor lie, a well-defended green, and the aforementioned fairway bunker, there’s no shame in planning to get there in three and taking an iron off the first tee. Three mid-iron shots will get on the spacious green for players playing the proper tees, so choose your tee appropriately and enjoy the conservative handshake at the beginning of the round.
Teeing off early in the morning can result in teeing off into a spectacular sunrise, so bring your sunglasses.
