Hole 18 Discussion

The 18th at Jimmy Clay is probably the most dramatic finishing hole in Austin. It was on this hole that Jordan Spieth won his last Texas State Championship. The hole is a dogleg par 4, with an extremely long distance to play to reach the dogleg.

The tee shot is downhill, but the landing area is tiny just where the fairway turns. The is water on the left side, but it’ll probably be out of range for most players. There are really only two options: play a great shot into the gap in the fairway, or play short and leave a much more challenging shot to the hole.

If the player reaches the gap, it should be a mid-to-long iron into the green. A shot played shorter will leave a very long approach, that will likely need to be played with a significant amount of left-to-right movement.

The green has danger on all sides. Water right and left, and a bunker on the right side of the green. Finishing this hole in par or better will be extremely challenging, no matter how it’s played.
