Tiger Beach, constructed in 2001 at the halfway point between Qingdao and Yantai in the province of Shandong, is a unique golfing experience in China. This is a real links course, or at least the closest thing to one anywhere on the continent. Wealthy businessman Beta Soong of Taiwan, who also owns Taiwan’s Silport Club in Shanghai, fell in love with links golf on a visit to Scotland, and was inspired to bring the experience back with him to China. The site features abundant sand and punishing winds that blow in off the Yellow Sea, and is outfitted with pot bunkers and ample fescue grass, just like the Scottish courses that impressed Soong; indeed he even saw to it that a replica of St. Andrews’ Swilcan Bridge be constructed at the par-5 4th, where the rough is cropped by goats. Tiger Beach is an absolutely unforgettable golfing experience.
